Words can be as deadly as a hard uppercut on the chin. The lightweight division is buzzing with drama. Veteran fighter Dustin Poirier just proved that with a verbal knockout aimed at Michael Chandler. Poirier didn’t hold back when addressing Chandler’s recent remarks.

It all started when Michael Chandler suggested that Poirier should retire. Poirier took offense to this and questioned Chandler’s place in the UFC hierarchy. He revealed that Chandler was not a veteran of the UFC and, as such, held no say or opinion in anyone’s decisions.

I mean, come on dude, ‘no thanks, retire, we good’, who the f**k is we? You just got here, buddy. You’re not one of us. You’re not we. I’ve been here, you know?

The ‘Diamond‘ emphasized his long-standing UFC career. He’s been throwing hands in the octagon since 2010. On the other hand, Chandler is relatively new to the UFC scene. He has just five fights under the UFC banner and hasn’t fought for almost two years. The duo have fought before, with Poirier getting the better of him and submitting him in the third round.

It’s clear that Poirier believes Chandler hasn’t earned his stripes yet. He sees Chandler as an outsider trying to speak for the division. Poirier is coming off a loss against Islam Makhachev in a highly competitive title fight. On the other hand, Chandler is still waiting for Conor McGregor after the UFC 303 fight was canceled. With the retirement talks looming over Poirier, he may very well decide to go another route.

Poirier isn’t shy about the appeal of a boxing-focused training regimen. He sees it as a less physically demanding option compared to MMA preparations. Dustin Poirier sees this as an optimal solution to be involved in combat sports, with less strain on his body.

I’ve been doing MMA a while and I still love the training camps and love fighting, but to go to purely boxing, the whole training camp would be a lot less wearing on my body. No wrestling, no jiu-jitsu, it would be boxing, running, swimming, you know. That’s fun stuff.

Poirier still loves MMA and its grueling training camps. However, after years in the sport, a change of pace sounds enticing. When asked about a potential opponent, Poirier didn’t hesitate. He had an opponent in mind, and it was the Stockton native Nate Diaz. A potential boxing match between these two would certainly draw major attention.
