The debate around lowering rims in women’s basketball has always been a tricky one. The idea has been around for a while. However, reigning WNBA MVP A’Ja Wilson had an interesting take on the idea.
The premise of the idea to lower rims, according to Shaq aimed at the notion that dunks could attract greater viewership to the WNBA. The unanimous WNBA MVP delivered a sharp and thoughtful response that left no doubt about her stance.

It just makes everyone wonder on what can actually bring excitement for the WNBA other than dunks. A’ja Wilson’s answer certainly cleared any doubts about the inconvenience of Shaq’s idea. However, her answer wasn’t actually directed at the HOF big man. Instead, it was directed at the anointed ‘King of New York’ Jalen Brunson.
Brunson supported the idea of lowering rims to allow WNBA players to dunk. However, A’ja Wilson pointed out the obvious issues with changing the height of the rims. A modification to lower the rim wouldn’t just accommodate more dunks but would fundamentally alter the arc and mechanics of shots for WNBA players. Thus, it will potentially create more issues than benefits.
