The NFL offseason is a time for players to relax and let loose. Given that free agency is in full swing, the rosters across the league have changed significantly. The New York Jets focused mainly on stacking their OL and apart from that, the team has made just two notable signings so far. The first was QB Tyrod Taylor and then, wide receiver Mike Williams. The wideout signed with the team on the 19th of March and just a few hours later was already seen supporting the city he was going to be representing.

Mike Williams became a New York Jet and just a few hours later was in attendance at the Brooklyn Nets matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans. He pulled up to Barclays Center to witness the home team host the Pelicans. For Williams, being a part of a big market is nothing new. He was a member of the Los Angeles Chargers before his move to the Big Apple.

Mike Williams was released by the Chargers last week as part of the team’s cost-cutting approach. He played in LA for seven seasons. He was the seventh-overall pick in the 2017 Draft and is a welcome addition to the Aaron Rodgers-led Jets offense.

The NY-based team is not betting big on him as they have signed him to a one-year deal for $15 million. Based on his performance this season, the Jets will take a call on his future with the team.

With the arrival of Jim Harbaugh in LA, the Chargers have been making multiple roster changes by letting their offensive veterans such as Keenan Allen and Mike Williams go. The Jets view Williams to be a key addition to their offense, one that can support Aaron Rodgers and be an effective threat on the field. At age 29, the biggest challenge for Williams will be to stay healthy.

In recent history, Williams has struggled to stay healthy and consistent. After signing an extension with the Chargers prior to the commencement of the 2022 NFL season, he has missed over 18 games due to multiple injuries including a torn ACL in 2023. But the one stat that led the Jets to take a chance on him was his production. He leads the league in yards per reception since 2018 with 15.8 yards.

If Williams manages to stay healthy and perform well, he will have a future in the Big Apple. If not anything else, the wide receiver will lead defenses to focus on multiple targets and take the heat off of Garrett Wilson.

The Jets are doing their best to ensure the 2024-25 season goes their way after Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles injury played spoilsport in the last season.
