It is fair to say that Klay Thompson’s offseason break has been nothing short of eventful, with his latest adventure being an impromptu beach hangout with a random family in Malibu. The four-time NBA champion was spotted playing beach ball with the kids and even accepted a beer from the family.

Thompson’s offseason has been filled with various activities, including boating with Quentin Grimes, hosting basketball camps in Cameroon with former Warriors teammate Festus Ezeli, and immersing himself in local dances. He’s also been visiting beaches and tourist attractions in Cameroon.

Aside from these spontaneous adventures, Thompson’s most significant move this offseason was joining the Dallas Mavericks. The five-time All-Star departed the Warriors after 11 seasons, during which he averaged 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

As the new season approaches, Thompson would return knowing fully well that the expectations have changed. His new team, the Mavericks would be eager to get back after a disappointing NBA Finals loss to the Boston Celtics.

Lakers tried to overpay Klay Thompson before he signed with Mavericks

Without an ounce of doubt, Klay Thompson’s departure from the Golden State Warriors was a significant move in the NBA offseason, with the five-time All-Star signing a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks. However, it’s been revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers were also interested in Thompson’s services and were willing to overpay him to join the team.

This revelation was made known by Andy Kamenetzky on the Locked on Lakers podcast, as he asserted that the Lakers offered Klay Thompson a four-year, $80 million deal, which was more than what he ultimately signed with the Mavericks. Despite Thompson’s age and declining prime, the Lakers saw value in his catch-and-shoot abilities and were desperate to add him to their roster.

I know the Lakers attempted to really overpay Klay Thompson pretty badly, it just didn’t work out.

Ultimately, Thompson chose to sign with the Mavericks, reportedly seeking a fresh start. The bright lights of Los Angeles and the pressure of playing for the Lakers may have been a factor in his decision, and not even his father could sway him towards the Purple and Gold.
