Sofia Richie opened up about her pregnancy journey in a recent heart-to-heart on the She MD podcast, hosted by her OBGYN, the compassionate Dr. Thais Aliabadi (or Dr. A for short), on October 15. The conversation delved deep into the challenges she faced before welcoming her daughter Eloise into the world in May, alongside her loving husband, Elliot Grainge.

“I feel like people really don’t talk about all the things that go wrong and all the things after you give birth that are so hard,” Sofia candidly shared with Dr. A and podcast co-host Mary Alice Haney. The story took a turn when she hit the 32-week mark of her pregnancy. What started as a normal day suddenly became a cause for concern as she woke up feeling “a little crampy.”

Assuming it was just another run-of-the-mill issue for a pregnant woman, Sofia reached out to Dr. A for some reassuring words. Little did she know that her situation was more serious than she initially thought. Instead of a casual response, Dr. A advised her to see a fetal specialist for monitoring. Sofia recalled, “She was like, ‘You know what? Actually, I think you should go see the fetal specialist to make sure that everything’s okay, and then you’ll go home. It’s not a big deal.'”

Grateful for heeding that advice, Sofia discovered that she was actually in active labor upon examination. “I was really terrified,” she confessed. Six days in the hospital followed, and although she yearned to return home, bed rest and constant observation became her new reality.

“So that’s what I did. It was kind of a waiting game from there,” Sofia shared. Despite the unexpected turn of events, she remained in active labor for an astonishing six weeks while on bed rest until they decided to induce labor at 38 weeks, as per Dr. A’s plan. “I had a fantastic delivery,” Sofia added, reflecting on the challenging journey.

Dr. A commended Sofia for her unwavering strength and resilience during such a tumultuous time. “This girl does not complain, by the way. What she went through, it was really traumatic. Six weeks she was having contractions,” the doctor acknowledged. Sofia, in turn, reassured everyone that despite the hurdles she faced before and after giving birth, both she and her daughter are healthy and thriving.
