Food adulteration and misinformation about packaged products are rampant today. As a result, consumers struggle to distinguish truth from misinformation amid excessive information. Former UFC champion Sean O’Malley recently learned surprising facts about peanut butter.

Sean O’Malley along with his coach Tim Welch recently uploaded a new podcast on their YouTube channel. The pair had invited popular doctor turned YouTuber Dr. Paul Saladino and talked about food and dietary choices. During the conversation, Saladino busted the myth about peanut butter being a healthy option.

The problem with Peanut butter, a lot of peanuts are very mouldy. They tend to take the mouldiest peanuts and grind them into peanut butter because you can’t see them. There is a mould that grows on peanut which contains a toxin called aflatoxin…it is pretty strongly associated with liver cancer

Diet is crucial for UFC fighters as it directly impacts their performance, weight management, recovery, and energy levels. A balanced diet ensures fighters maintain strength, endurance, and focus while meeting strict weight-cut requirements. Proper nutrition also aids in muscle repair and reduces injury risks, giving them a competitive edge in training and fights.

Fighters such as Sean O’Malley, Colby Covington, Arnold Allen, and others fight close to their natural weight. On the other hand, someone like Paddy Pimblett has to undergo a massive weight cut to reach the 155-pound mark. Achieving the weight before the fight is definitely one of the hardest parts of fighting. It turns out peanut butter helped one fighter attain the required weight.

How a UFC legend used peanut butter to lose weight before the fight 

In the history of UFC, fighters cut weight in order to get the size advantage over their opponents. Weight cutting in MMA is dangerous, causing severe dehydration and organ damage. Rapid weight loss weakens fighters, reducing stamina and immune strength.

An extreme case may lead to fainting, long-term health problems, or death. Safer practices are essential to protect fighters’ health. However, UFC veteran Chris Weidman once had to go through a huge cut in less time and used peanut butter.

The weight just wasn’t coming off, so then I was down to eating a spoonful of peanut butter for the day. My brain started disappearing. I had no idea what people were saying to me. I was delirious. And then basically by the time weight cut time came around, I was not healthy. It’s something I would never do again.

Over the years fans have seen fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, Khamzat Chimaev and others struggle with weight cuts. This has also forced many to move up in weight. Recently, the reigning featherweight champion Ilia Topuria also talked about potentially making his lightweight debut. Fighters can only shortcuts only a few times regarding weight cuts because the body eventually gives up.
