Sanjay Leela Bhansali, a visionary filmmaker known for his grand and opulent movies, faced a tumultuous time while filming the epic saga Padmaavat, starring the powerhouse duo Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh. Despite encountering fierce opposition and physical attacks on set, Bhansali remained steadfast in his commitment to bring his cinematic vision to life.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhansali opened up about the challenges he faced during the making of Padmaavat. He candidly shared how he was physically attacked on set, yet he refused to let any of the turmoil reflect in his work. The very next day after the attack, Bhansali insisted on returning to the same location to continue filming, much to the astonishment of his crew who questioned his resolve.
The controversy surrounding Padmaavat stemmed from its retelling of the story of a Rajput queen, drawing ire from various right-wing organizations who accused Bhansali of distorting historical facts. Despite facing multiple attacks on himself and his production, Bhansali remained resolute in his determination to see the project through.
Reflecting on the turbulent period, Bhansali remarked, โDuring Padmaavat, I faced a barrage of attacksโphysical, mental, emotional. But I never let any of it show on screen. I am made of iron and steel; Iโm not budging. Do whatever you want.โ His unwavering commitment to his artistry and his refusal to be swayed by external pressures exemplify his indomitable spirit as a filmmaker.
One of the most harrowing incidents occurred at the Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where Bhansali was attacked by members of Karni Sena. Despite the humiliation and adversity he faced, Bhansali’s passion for his craft propelled him to return to the very place where he was targeted, undeterred in his mission to bring his creative vision to fruition.
Amidst legal battles and delays in the film’s release, Padmaavat eventually premiered in January 2018, captivating audiences and raking in a staggering Rs 600 crore at the box office. Bhansali’s resilience in the face of adversity serves as a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression and the unwavering dedication of a true storyteller.
