Bollywood has always been a hub for complex characters that spark debate among filmmakers and actors, and one character that stands out is Devdas. Sanjay Leela Bhansali took on the challenge of bringing this character to life in his film adaptation of the 1917 novel. Recently, Shah Rukh Khan opened up about his reservations towards the character, citing his questionable treatment of women and commitment issues. However, in a new interview, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali came to Devdas’ defense, painting him as a noble soul who loved deeply.

In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhansali delved into the complexities of Devdas and the criticism surrounding the character. While many viewed Devdas as a toxic figure, Bhansali saw him through a different lens. “My actors questioned the purpose of telling this story, labeling it as romanticizing alcoholism,” he shared. “But to me, Devdas was a man who knew how to love. Our ultimate duty in life is to love and be loved. Does anyone truly love Devdas? To me, his love for Paro was pure and unwavering.”

Bhansali emphasized that Devdas’ ability to love recklessly and passionately set him apart as a noble character. Despite being labeled a “loser” by some, Bhansali believed that Devdas epitomized the essence of true love. “Devdas is not a tale of defeat; it’s a love story. He may not have been perfect, but his love for Paro was his driving force. That, to me, is the heart of this story.”

The conversation around Devdas was reignited when Shah Rukh Khan reflected on his portrayal of the character during the Locarno Film Festival. Khan admitted to intentionally portraying Devdas as flawed and spineless, cautioning viewers against idolizing such traits. While praising Bhansali’s artistic vision, Khan made it clear that Devdas was not a role model to emulate.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s rendition of Devdas hit screens in 2002, captivating audiences with its portrayal of unrequited love and heartbreak. The film follows Devdas’ tumultuous journey as he grapples with societal expectations and his own inner demons. With a stellar cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit, the film soared to commercial success, leaving a lasting impact on Bollywood cinema. Through Bhansali’s lens, Devdas emerges not as a tragic figure but as a testament to the enduring power of love.
