Amongst all the Bloodline drama, Roman Reigns is also making sure that he is defending his championship. The tensions between The Usos and him are not stopping him from providing a championship match to the fans. Recently, on a house show, The Tribal Chief defended his title against none other than WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio.
Roman Reigns suffered his first loss in months after Solo got pinned for a victory by Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. The loss occurred when Jimmy Uso turned on his cousins and super-kicked them at Night of Champions. The former Tag Team Champion decided to leave The Bloodline and stand face-to-face with The Tribal Chief. His brother Jey would also eventually turn on Reigns, setting up a match between the members of the Bloodline.
After the high drama episode of SmackDown, Reigns, and others went to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a house show. Roman Reigns defended his WWE Championship for the first time since WrestleMania 39 at the show. He defended his titles against Rey Mysterio. This was the first time Reigns was defending his titles after defeating Cody Rhodes.
During the match, The Usos would interrupt the match and take down Solo Sikoa. Additionally, Rey’s son, Dominik Mysterio, also interfered, and this resulted in the 48-year-old losing the match. Rey and his son have been in a long-term feud, with their only one-on-one televised match coming at WrestleMania, where Rey defeated Dominik Mysterio.
The live event was promoted as the first time Roman Reigns had returned to title defense since WrestleMania. This was because, since the latter months of last year, Reigns has started making fewer appearances and wrestling even fewer matches. Therefore, a title defense on a house show is extremely rare for The Tribal Chief.
Look back at the feud between Roman Reigns and Rey Mysterio from 2021
During the pandemic era in WWE, Roman Reigns defended his championship against Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Edge, and many others. One of the competitors was The Lucha legend Rey Mysterio. The feud began when Reigns brutally assaulted Rey’s son, Dominik Mystero, who was with his father at the time.
This would lead to a month-long feud between the two, as Reigns would attack and brutalize Rey and his son. The two would have a match on an episode of SmackDown in June 2021. The two competed in a Hell in a Cell match to win the Universal Championship.
Roman Reigns would unfortunately destroy Rey Mysterio in the match. During the next week’s episode, when Reigns was addressing the victory, he was interrupted by a returning Edge. The two would have a match at the upcoming Money in the Bank 2021.
