Monster Energy Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo was once upon a time, hailed as the rider to beat. After Marc Marquez’s era of dominance came to an end, Fabio tried to take over. Having won the 2021 Rider’s MotoGP championship, it seemed like he was in for a ride filled with glory. Unfortunately, it seems like that was not going to be the case at all. After the 2021 season, things have changed drastically.
Pecco Bagnaia has become the man to beat. The Ducati factory rider went on to win the 2022 MotoGP championship whilst taking the title away from the Frenchman. Going into 2023, Bagnaia has been dominating the championship so far with his incredible streak of performances. Meanwhile, Fabio has been struggling with the Yamaha M1 on the track.
The 2023 Mugello GP was the second time that Fabio Quartararo was not able to match his previous performance on his Yamaha. He also went on to set a slower race time than last year at LeMans ( +13.092s). Fabio’s race time at Mugello was approximately 15.165 seconds slower than last year. While the Frenchman was focused on increasing the engine performance, other areas have gotten affected.
Fabio Quartararo struggled a lot during the Mugello MotoGP weekend
Here is what the Frenchman had to say in an interview. “Really difficult,” Quartararo said. “I was feeling much better with soft, but we talked with the team, that the soft was not going to handle the race. I was feeling great, but we chose the medium that for me was not the best decision,” he continued. “But we took that and it was difficult. I was behind Enea all the race and I could not even try to overtake,” he stated.
The shocking split between Fabio Quartararo and his manager Eric Mahe was also the talk of the weekend. This news had come just a year after Marc Marquez split up with his longtime Moto GP manager. While it seems like Fabio’s title chances this year have deteriorated, he still hasn’t lost any hope. It will be interesting to see how the French MotoGP rider performs in the coming few races.
