After UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira’s impressive performance last weekend, the debate about the pound-for-pound best fighter reignited. This time, former UFC double champion Conor McGregor shared his thoughts on the debate. As such, he backed the Brazilian fighter and left out other notable names from his list.
The ‘Notorious‘ Conor McGregor is known for being outspoken and recently expressed his opinions during an interview. The popular sports journalist, The Schmo, talked with McGregor, and he asked him about various topics. He even questioned the Irishman about his opinion on the pound-for-pound debate. McGregor promptly named Alex Pereira as the top fighter in the division.
McGregor’s assessment is solely based on Alex Pereira’s performance this year. ‘Poatan’ has fought three times this year, successfully defending his title. He even fought two former light heavyweight champions and comfortably defeated them with his exceptional striking skills. With his most recent win at UFC 307, Poatan also broke Ronda Rousey’s record for the shortest time between three world title defenses.
This isn’t the only time McGregor has backed ‘Poatan.’ After defeating Khalil Rountree, Conor McGregor seemed thrilled watching the Brazilian fighter’s performance. Just minutes later, McGregor expressed his desire for Pereira to compete in a weight class above. He also mentioned wanting Pereira to fight against heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Interestingly, Pereira has recently spoken about McGregor as well.
Alex Pereira builds a perfect UFC fighter with one of Conor McGregor’s skills
Throughout his illustrious career, the Notorious Conor McGregor has had some exciting and highly buzzed-about moments in the sport. He has also had some interesting fighting moments. However, most notably, much of McGregor’s popularity has come from his excellent mic skills.
Similar to almost everyone in the community, Alex Pereira also feels that the Irishman excels in that aspect of the business. Ahead of his UFC 307, ESPN MMA wanted the light heavyweight champion to make his perfect UFC fighter. While creating that fighter, Pereira included McGregor’s on-mic talents.
Amidst all these, McGregor has been absent from competition for quite some time. Although he has made deliberate attempts to return, the Irishman has faced several obstacles. Currently, the Notorious is aiming for a return in 2025. Now, it remains to be seen when the UFC will announce his fight.
