Mark Coleman is back at the surgery table just months after hospitalization for smoke inhalation from a house fire. Coleman was instrumental in the popularization of wrestling in MMA. He is also infamous as the “Godfather of Ground-and-Pound.” Nevertheless, there are battles outside combat sports that prove costly for all flesh and blood.

Now, Coleman finds yet another medical issue on his plate. In March, Coleman helped pull his parents out of their burning home in Ohio. “Fighting for his life” as he was under intubation and sedated while doctors removed soot from his lungs. The matter went immensely viral. Now, Mark Coleman piles on new deeds to that.

Back in the hospital again, …My hip is septically infected. They were going to do emergency surgery today, but I’m on blood thinners so they’re going to have to wait until Monday. So I’m going to hang out here for the weekend. Everything’s going to be fine. Carnivore diet, nine ancestral tenants. Hammer house for life, who’s in?

Mark Coleman posted a video Thursday, saying he was due to get surgery for a septic hip infection. It’s also called septic arthritis or septic hips. The Mayo Clinic says it often originates from elsewhere in the body, sometimes from an open wound like staphylococcus. Without surgery to drain the joint, the condition can quickly become painful for the UFC Hall of Famer.

Coleman attended the historic UFC 300 in April with his daughters as a special guest. Due to his brave antics, he got to put the “BMF” strap around Max Holloway after his fifth-round dramatic KO over Justin Gaethje. There’s no word on how long ‘Hammer will need to recover. “Life is good,” insisted Mark Coleman.

Mark Coleman was recognized during UFC 300 after surviving a life-threatening experience. Weeks after a medically-induced coma, Coleman and daughters Morgan and Kenzie made the legacy walkout to “My Hero” by Foo Fighters during the UFC 300 main card at T-Mobile Arena. It was an emotional moment for him as well as the UFC fans.

Ahead of UFC 300, Max Holloway wanted Mark Coleman to present the belt, suggesting the real-life BMF elements. Soon, Gaethje agreed as well. During UFC 300’s Media Day conference, when MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn presented the proposition, bossman Dana White agreed. The 59-year-old Coleman felt humbled at the whole experience.

I’m blessed to be here, I’m healthy, and health is wealth, and I have that. I’m very fortunate. God was with me about a month ago, and he got me through the scariest night of my life.

Special walkouts are not a common occurrence in the UFC. However, the promotion did a similar one for another UFC Hall of Famer, Matt Hughes, after he was nearly killed in a collision between his car and a train. The promotion allowed Hughes to come out for UFC Fight Night 124 in 2018. It was his first public appearance since the collision. As such, Coleman’s heroics warranted something similar.
