Former F1 champion believes McLaren who is currently drowning in the midfield to compete with Red Bull as the season progresses. The Woking-based team has a major upgrade package awaiting them. However, the team still has plenty of work to do just to find themselves in the points let alone compete with Red Bull.

While speaking to Unibet two times F1 world champion Mika Hakkinen stated that no one could challenge Red Bull so far and no one might close the gap towards the end of 2023. He then suggested that his former team, Mclaren might challenge Red Bull to a certain extent as he expects significant progress from them in the upcoming months.

“It is not easy for the other teams to catch up. I don’t think anyone is able to catch up [to Red Bull] this year…The only surprise I think we’ll see is McLaren’s possible progress during the next two months. I think they will surprise us massively, just in terms of the speed of the car. They will probably challenge Red Bull,”. Hakkinen said.

Can McLaren stage a remarkable comeback and fulfill Mika’s expectations?

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri

McLaren was a dominant force back in the 90s and 2000s. After having a massive dip in form, the Woking team brought in Zak Brown as team CEO. With hopes of a revival, the papaya team was on a steady incline when rebuilding the group. However, in recent years, they have not been competitive enough.

After a bizarre Bahrain GP that saw both the drivers out of the points, a P3 qualifying result for Lando Norris at Barcelona seemed like a ray of hope. But a horrid race start for the Brit saw him tumble down the order and finish the race in P17. Oscar Piastri, who replaced Daniel Ricciardo this year, only has a modest 5 points to his name.

Red Bull, on the other hand, has emerged victorious in all seven races so far. With two wins to Sergio Perez’s name and 5 to Max Verstappen’s name, Red Bull look like an invincible force. With only 17 points, McLaren is P6 in the standings, and Red Bull is leading the constructors with 287 points.
