Michael Jordan's Highland Park, Illinois mansion under contract

For thirteen years, Chicago, Illinois was home to Michael Jordan. After his second retirement, he left the Chicago Bulls for good. But he still had a home in Illinois, not just a normal one, but it was as big as the superstar was in the sporting world. He eventually stopped living in that mansion and put it up for sale. But his asking price did not bring in any potential buyers. Now after more than a decade, the NBA legend has found one.

CBS News Chicago revealed that the mansion and its estate were finally listed as ‘contingent’, suggesting a deal was done subject to conditions between ‘His Airness’ and an unknown buyer. That deal happened after Jordan dropped the initial asking price of the property from $29 million to approximately $15 million. The final number of $14,855,000 which tallies to his iconic jersey number 23 was the deal breaker ending 12 long years of abandonment.

It is not as if Michael Jordan needed the money, especially after making billions in profits from the sale of the Charlotte Hornets. But it was more about letting go of the mansion as he was not going to stay in it anymore. The 56,000-square-foot property has Jordan’s signature all over it. It features a regulation-sized basketball gymnasium, a circular infinity pool, a putting green, a tennis court, and a cigar room.

With his NBA ownership career over, he seems to have preferred to stay back home and travel the world as and when he desires. He currently resides in his native North Carolina and also has a massive mansion in Florida.

Michael Jordan lived the definition of a king-sized athlete’s life

This property was not something that Michael Jordan purchased and then customized. In fact, he purchased the barren plot and started creating his dream home. Eventually, it projected the king-sized life of the superstar, also housing his many custom cars. But all of that was when he was still playing.

He went on to live an even bigger life after retiring. His purchase of the Hornets moved him closer back home. But the continuous influx of funds from his lifetime deal with Nike enabled him to start constructing another mansion in Florida, next to the Jupiter Island Golf Club. With golf being his other obsession, it made perfect sense for the 61-year-old.

With a net worth of over $3 billion, money is not a problem for the 6-time NBA champion. But he too knows that he had outgrown the Illinois property – not because of his wealth, but because it did not serve him any purpose after moving back home.
