The all-time leading scorer thought the cheers were for him, so he raised his right arm to acknowledge the crowd. Then, he used both hands to depict the crown, suggesting that he was the King. However, as the camera panned out, it was evident that the crowd was cheering for Marchand.
After all, these were mostly French fans cheering for their local hero. Someone who took the fight to the world and came out on top. The success came with four gold medals in swimming and beating 3 Olympic records in the process. Leon Marchand and those sitting nearby understood the gaffe. Nevertheless, he raised his hand up to acknowledge the cheers.
