Notably, Thompson has always been a long-time admirer of the Mavs legend. The Mavs retired Nowitzki’s jersey against the Golden State Warriors in 2022. In relevance to this, Thompson sent the ‘Big German’ a heartfelt note, demonstrating his admiration for the player on social media. In addition, Thompson attending Nowitizki’s charity event showcases his respect for the Mavs legend.
Furthermore, these types of showings also send a great message to the Mavs’ fanbase promoting unity amongst the Mavericks family. Also, Thompson has stated earlier that he is ‘ready for a new start’ with his new side ahead of the new season. Unquestionably, Klay Thompson‘s signing of a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks following his departure from the Golden State Warriors was a major move during the NBA summer. It has been disclosed, nonetheless, that the Los Angeles Lakers were also considering Thompson’s services and were prepared to give him a premium to join the organization.
Andy Kamenetzky revealed this information on the Locked on Lakers podcast. He claimed that Klay Thompson was given a four-year, $80 million contract by the Lakers. This was more than what he finally signed with the Mavericks for. The Lakers were eager to add Thompson to their squad. This was because they valued his catch-and-shoot skills.
I know the Lakers attempted to really overpay Klay Thompson pretty badly, it just didn’t work out.
