Thompson spoke with Grant Afseth at the ‘Dirk Nowitzki Foundation Tennis Classic’, openly revealing why he joined the team and the title hopes he brings to the 2024-25 NBA season. Also, Thompson’s addition to the Mavs solves a major issue they had been dealing with this past 2023-24 NBA season: Their shooting outside the 3-point line.
The team was so close last year—three wins away from a championship—so I know we have the ingredients for success. We just have to stay together and build week by week. I know we can do something special, and that’s why I’m here early, just to get a feel for the city and the lay of the land. And I’m having fun while doing it.

That said, the Mavericks GM also mentioned once that getting Thompson to the Mavs was a ‘no-brainer.’ Interestingly, Thompson reportedly rejected the Los Angeles Lakers to sign for the Mavs. This demonstrates his eagerness to join the Mavs and be a part of this special group ahead of the new NBA season. Moreover, LeBron James was so keen on the Lakers signing Thompson that he was ready to take a pay cut.
Thompson’s shooting ability, leadership, and a new bond with his teammates position the Mavericks for another strong playoff run. Around 2 months ago, Klay Thompson participated in his first-ever practice session with the Dallas Mavericks. Since then, he has been enjoying everything in and around the franchise. Notably, Thompson shared a heartfelt message to the Mavs fans during his 1st practice session. He claimed that he is ‘ready to go and is happy to be at the franchise’ ahead of the new NBA season.
Klay Thompson said, “Maverick Fans, its Klay Thompson checking in from the HQ, man I’m so excited to be here…it stars today, I’m getting to work, gonna put some shorts up. Let’s Go. You got some greatness on the rise.” That said, Thompson has well and truly settled in very well in Dallas. He also participated in a charity event hosted by Mavs legend Dirk Nowitzki.
