The Phoenix Suns may be struggling to find a rhythm, but that hasn’t stopped Kevin Durant from meeting up with some old rivals during his off-time. Recently, Durant made an appearance on the Out the Mud podcast hosted by former NBA stars Zach Randolph and Tony Allen. Although the veterans of the league went into detail about their experiences facing off, Allen’s college story stole the show.
During the show, Tony Allen revealed a story about how he was kicked out of junior college in his freshman year right after winning the Freshman of the Year award. The story was definitely a shocker as Kevin Durant took a minute to process why a standout freshman would be kicked out. When Allen revealed that the reason for his expulsion was his being caught consuming ‘weed,’ the room burst into a riot.
Tony Allen attended his freshman year of college at Butler County Community College, where this incident presumably took place. In his freshman year, Allen averaged 16.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.8 steals in 32 games, taking home Second Team All-Jayhawk West Conference and the Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year honors.
However, as he detailed in the story, after a striking freshman year, Allen would head to Wabash Valley College, where he would spend his sophomore season before heading to the Oklahoma State Cowboys, where he would finish the rest of his collegiate career before his legendary NBA career.
Kevin Durant names Tony Allen as toughest defender he faced
As one of the greatest scorers of all time, there have barely been any players in NBA history able to contain Kevin Durant. At almost seven feet tall with a practically unblockable jumper, guarding KD has always been a team-wide assignment for the opposition. However, during his appearance on the Out the Mud podcast, Durant revealed that Tony Allen was the one defender who gave him sleepless nights.
Durant cited Allen’s physicality and especially his fit within the Grit and Grind Grizzlies which made the team, and Allen himself, some of his toughest opponents to score against. However, while Kevin Durant may cite Tony Allen as his defensive nightmare, he dominated against him nevertheless.
In 43 games in the regular season and playoffs versus Tony Allen in his career, Kevin Durant averaged a whopping 27.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists. These are great numbers, although the battles between Durant and Allen were almost evenly split, with Allen leading their head-to-head matchups 21-22.
