Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira clashed once again at UFC 303 in a highly-anticipated rematch. Given their previous encounters, every MMA fan was eager to see them go again at each other. The intense UFC 303 showdown resulted in Pereira’s victory, where he asserted his dominance as the light heavyweight champion.

On the other hand, Prochazka’s performance left much to be desired, prompting speculation about the level of preparation from his training camp. Firas Zahabi, known for mentoring Georges St-Pierre, openly expressed disappointment with Prochazka’s performance. It was so much of a disappointment that the coach called it the ‘worst approach.’

Very dissapointing strategy by Jiri (for not wrestling against Pereira). Jiri was just seemingly happy to strike. I will tell you within the first minute of round 1, Poatan had landed like four kicks and you could tell he was already hurting Jiri’s legs. I think that was his worst approach to a fight ever.

Jiri Prochazka made his UFC debut in 2020. He has an impressive record in professional MMA (30-5-1). His extensive experience surprised many, including Zahabi, with his approach to the fight against Pereira. Many considered mixing in grappling as a suitable strategy against the champion. Alex Pereira is known for his dominant kickboxing and fighting with a proper stance.

Following his defeat, Prochazka even acknowledged the need to evolve, become better, or never fight inside the octagon. Despite this, Prochazka remains a top target for many upcoming light heavyweights. He has decided to take some time off and consider his next steps. This includes a potential move down to the middleweight division.

During the post-fight press conference following his victory against Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 300, Jiri Prochazka was asked about the possibility of moving up to the heavyweight division after reclaiming his title. However, Prochazka teased a move down to 185 pounds.

Rather than heavyweight, I thought I would try middleweight. Because the way I feel my metabolism now, and the way my body works in preparation. I know I could handle middleweight division, with some lighter diet. But I would definitely concentrate on that after winning the light heavyweight title.

Following his defeat, Prochazka’s coach, Martin Karaivanov, has expressed approval for Prochazka’s desire to move down to middleweight. Nothing is concrete as of now. The move down to middleweight remains a big cut for someone of Prochazka’s physique. It would pave the way for exciting bouts in the division. As such, it remains to be seen if the Czech fighter goes down that path once his hiatus ends.
