For an elite mixed martial artist known for his grappling prowess, Islam Makhachev’s abilities with a basketball are rather unexpected. But it’s clearly not the first time he’s picked up a basketball.
Makhachev’s well-rounded athletic talents shouldn’t come as a total shock. The UFC’s latest dominant force has long spoken about his passion for various sports growing up. Still, watching the combat sambo world champion smoothly hoop the ball was an amusing sight for fight fans. The Dagestani fighters are known to play the ‘Dagestani basketball,’ a different version of regular basketball.
Makhachev is coming off a recent KO victory over the former featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski. He is now set to fight against the veteran, Dustin Poirier. Poirier recently knocked out Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. The two will face each other in a much-anticipated bout with the title on the line. This may very well be Dustin Poirier’s last fight in the Octagon.

His sole purpose lies in defending his lightweight belt and ultimately vying for the welterweight belt as well.
