The UFC’s lightweight division has several superstars in the sport. They achieved superstar status with their exciting fighting style. According to fans online, Charles Oliveira is the most exciting fighter in the top 5 of the lightweight rankings, while Mateusz Gamrot is the least. Interestingly, the latter is critical of Oliveira’s interest in fighting Colby Covington at welterweight.

Covington recently called out Oliveira, and the Brazilian expressed interest in the fight. 5th ranked Gamrot had called out Oliveira before, but the Brazilian respectfully declined, revealing his interest in being the backup fighter for Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler. Gamrot has now taken to social media platform X to voice his discontent towards Oliveira.

We thought you were better than that, @CharlesDoBronxs. You know I’ll give you fire on the ground… but maybe that’s why you’d rather fight Colby..

Gamrot indirectly alleged Oliveira ducked him, as he wanted to fight Covington, who is inactive and 2-3 in his past five fights. For context, Gamrot is an elite wrestler, sporting a 7-2 record in the UFC. Moreover, he was a two-division champion at KSW and had an unbeaten streak before his UFC debut. Furthermore, Gamrot has never suffered TKO/submission losses in his professional MMA career.

Even though Gamrot has title aspirations and is worthy of one, the logjam at the division would mean he won’t get it anytime soon. Gamrot was the backup fighter for the originally planned Charles Olivera vs. Islam Makhachev matchup at UFC 294. However, the UFC roped in Alexander Volkanovski on short notice after Oliveira pulled out due to injury.

Mateusz Gamrot is one of the best fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division with a wrestling style. Khabib Nurmagomedov had already picked Gamrot as a future title challenger for Islam Makhachev. Gamrot is integral to Dustin Poirier’s training camp at American Top Team.

Poirier is fighting Makhachev, one of the best grapplers in the division. As such, it is easy to realize why Gamrot is part of the training camp. Even though they are in the same division, Gamrot has revealed he would only fight Poirier if a title is on the line.

Arman Tsarukyan, the number one contender at lightweight, also trains at ATT. However, he has not trained with Poirier in more than four years. Interestingly, Tsarukyan fought Gamrot, losing via unanimous decision in a closely contested matchup, which many felt the Armenian fighter deserved to win.
