"I can't smoke weed tonight," UFC 303 female fighter reveals 'biggest worry' after getting lips stitched

The UFC 303 was filled with some incredible fights and one of them was between Gillian Robertson and Michelle Waterson-Gomez. The strawweight bout took place in the preliminary card and ended with Robertson taking the win. However, despite the win, Robertson had some different things on her mind.

During the fight, Gillian Robertson dominated the fight with her wrestling-heavy approach and won via unanimous decision. However, in the process, she busted open her lips and had to get stitches. While talking about her injury, the first thing that the Canadian was concerned about was not being able to smoke.

Literally the first thing I said after the fight, ‘I can’t smoke weed tonight.’ So that was my biggest worry

Robertson came into the fight with a game plan and stuck with it throughout the rounds. For nearly the whole bout, Robertson was in a favorable position on the canvas. There were multiple failed attempts at an armbar. Waterson-Gomez’s grappling was good enough to keep Robertson from submitting her but not good enough to stop her from taking all the control.

In the third round, Robertson got on Waterson-Gomez’s back and gave her a hard punch, but the bout was eventually stopped. Robertson’s triumph makes it two straight and four out of her last five wins. Robertson has finally settled in at strawweight despite having spent the majority of her career at flyweight. On the other hand, Waterson-Gomez took this opportunity to give an unfortunate message to the fight fans.

Michelle Waterson-Gomez announces retirement after losing to Gillian Robertson at UFC 303

For 38-year-old Michelle Waterson-Gomez, the fight proved to be her last, as she declared her retirement in the octagon after it. During her octagon interview with Joe Rogan, the promotion had a tribute package prepared and played it while she struggled to control her emotions. It was an extremely emotional moment and even Rogan couldn’t stop his tears.

In her retirement speech, Waterson-Gomez thanked her time in the promotion and all the fans. The fighter revealed she was on the fence about retirement and talked to her husband about it. According to Waterson-Gomez, her husband gave her the support to make the hard decision of leaving the sport.

I’ve been contemplating this, and I’ve been talking to my husband.  “‘What am I if I’m not fighting?’ He told me, ‘Just because you’re not fighting in the octagon doesn’t mean you stop fighting.’ That really helped me to accept moving on

At UFC 303, Waterson-Gomez lost her fifth straight match and her seventh of the previous eight. A professional fighter since 2007, the flyweight became a member of the UFC in 2015. She faced several champions and big names, such as Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Carla Esparza, and Rose Namajunas. Waterson-Gomez was the former atomweight champion of Invicta FC. However, never came close to fighting for the UFC title.
