Lewis Hamilton has solidified his place in the history books as one of the best F1 drivers ever. The 38-year-old joined Mercedes in 2013 after being convinced by former world champion Niki Lauda to sign with the Silver Arrows. However, there was once when Lauda was unhappy with Hamiltonโ€™s activities outside of racing in Formula 1.

The 7-time world champion explained that Lauda had a chat with Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff. The former F1 driver had told Wolff that Hamilton simply could not sustain racing while pursuing activities outside the sport. Lewis is famous for partaking in several projects and even creating his unreleased music while away from the F1 paddock.

Hamilton left McLaren at the end of 2012 in a risky move that shocked the sporting world. Many believed that this would cause a downfall of the British driver, with Mercedes trailing behind the Woking-based team. Yet, Niki Lauda had assured Lewis that he would achieve great success with Brackley. This turned out to be true as soon as the F1 turbo hybrid era began, and so did the Mercedes dominance.

Throughout the years, Niki and Lewis maintained a close bond between themselves as they reached new heights. However, the Austrian world champion died right before the 2019 Monaco GP. Hamilton paid tribute to the legend as he went on to win the iconic race with a special helmet designed to pay homage to Lauda.

Thus, Lewis Hamilton convinced Niki Lauda to let him pursue activities outside the paddock. The British driver showcased his talent to the Austrian despite being involved in endeavors outside the sport. Perhaps this further proved to Lauda that Hamilton was truly one of the greatest to have raced at the pinnacle of motorsport.
