It is a fight that Aspinall has been pushing, ever since he became the interim champion. However, Jon Jones is still stuck on fighting Stipe Miocic upon his return.
After successfully defending his interim heavyweight title, Tom Aspinall did an interview with Megan Olivi. During the conversation, Aspinall sent out an important message to Jon Jones. He said that he was ready to take on the winner of Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic. However, he urged the heavyweight champion to hand over the title if he did not want the fight.
I’ll wait…that’s one worth waiting for. If Jon Jones doesn’t want to do it, OK. Just hand me over the title. I’ll take it, no problem. But that’s the fight I want. It’s the right fight to do. I understand that’s a huge fight for the UFC and the company — Stipe vs. Jon Jones. But, c’mon, you can’t leave me out.

UFC CEO, Dana White made a comment at the UFC 304 post-fight press conference. He stated that the UFC still plans on going ahead with the Jones vs. Miocic matchup. However, after this recent win, Tom Aspinall will likely be the backup fighter in case either Jones or Miocic fall through again.
Jones vs. Miocic was supposed to happen last year at UFC 295. But Jones got injured and the fight fell through. Meanwhile, Aspinall took on Sergei Pavlovich and finished the fight in the first round to become the interim heavyweight champion.
