UFC 301 had several exciting fights even though the card didn’t have the star power of the previous PPV events, UFC 300 and UFC 299. Submission finishes of Anthony Smith and Michel Pereira, Jose Aldo‘s dominant victory, and Caio Borralho‘s KO victory were impressive. Though brutal, the doctor stoppage victory of Joanderson Brito over Jack Shore was more impressive.

After losing his undefeated record to Ricky Simon, Shore moved to featherweight and finished Makwan Amirkhani. At UFC 301, Shore was looking to start a streak against Brito in enemy territory. Unfortunately for Shore, Brito had other plans. In the featured matchup of the prelims of UFC 301, Brito’s brutal leg kicks forced the referee to call in the ringside doctor, who made the referee stop the fight.

Brito began the fight with non-stop leg kicks, forcing Shore to clinch up. The Englishman had his legs bandaged up midway through round 1. In round 2, Brito started where he left off. However, this time, the first leg kick he landed opened a gash on Shore’s left leg, with blood spurting out. After a couple of seconds, referee Joao Claudio Soares halted the fight and called the ringside doctor, eventually resulting in the finish.

There have been several leg-kick TKOs in the UFC. Co-main event fighter Jonathan Martinez had two in a row. However, doctor stoppage due to leg kicks is a rarity. Interestingly, even worse than the gash and the blood was the doctor inserting his finger inside the gash. Nonetheless, Brito has made it five wins in a row after losing his UFC debut to Bill Algeo.

Cuts have resulted in stoppage victories in the UFC. Jorge Masvidal won the inaugural BMF title fight at UFC 244 via doctor stoppage. Nate Diaz, his opponent, had suffered a nasty cut over his eye, forcing the ringside physician to urge the referee to call the fight off.

However, a doctor stoppage via a cut on the leg in the UFC has never happened. There have been stoppages due to leg breaks, as evidenced by the case of Anderson Silva, Chris Weidman, and Conor McGregor. Therefore, the leg-cut TKO stoppage at UFC 301 has fight fans in shock. See how they reacted to it below.

Due to the success of leg kicks in his fight against Jack Shore, Joanderson Brito will likely employ the game plan in his upcoming fights. However, leg kicks are a double-edged sword. If checked properly, it would be counterproductive to the user.
