The boxing community recognizes Floyd Mayweather as a legendary figure in the sport. Despite retiring from professional boxing, Mayweather continues to mentor young boxers, including Curmel Moton. Before his upcoming fight, Mayweatherโ€™s protege, Moton, faced criticism from UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen.

Curmel Moton is set to have his fourth fight of the year. This time, it is on short notice against Mexican boxer Hilario Martinez Moreno. The fight is scheduled to take place at the grand Riyadh Season fight night this weekend. Moton recently posted a tweet on his X account to promote the fight. As such, Chael Sonnen criticized the young boxerโ€™s way of promoting it.

This is the worst plug or even attempt at self promotion Iโ€™ve ever seen on social media. Itโ€™s so bad that it works and itโ€™s so bad that Iโ€™m going to share so I guess technically itโ€™s a win?

Professional fighters often engage in various antics to promote their fights, ranging from intriguing skits to online back-and-forths. Meanwhile, Moton only posted a casual picture of himself with a caption saying, โ€œItโ€™s fight week tune in.โ€

The UFC Hall of Famer might have been displeased with the lack of effort. This is not the first time Chael Sonnen has had an issue with someone from the boxing fraternity. Interestingly, the UFC Hall of Famer once publicly voiced his criticism of multiple boxing legends, such as Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson.

While taking jibes at Moton, Chael Sonnen also berated the young boxerโ€™s budding career. Sonnenโ€™s critique seemed to overlook Motonโ€™s relative inexperience. In contrast, Mayweather has frequently expressed admiration for his protegeโ€™s remarkable skills.

Throughout his illustrious career, Floyd โ€˜Moneyโ€™ Mayweather has inspired many aspiring boxers. Before Curmel Moton, there was Gervonta Davis, who benefited from the boxing legendโ€™s mentorship. However, their relationship soured, and they ended up having animosities toward each other. Meanwhile, Mayweather consistently praised Motonโ€™s skills long before his pro debut.

Curmel Moton had an extraordinary amateur record with 61 wins and only three defeats. Following this, Floyd Mayweather signed the young boxer under his promotional banner. He seemed impressed with the young boxerโ€™s skill set and even called out a champion for Motonโ€™s professional boxing debut. Mayweather praised his protege while calling out Motonโ€™s potential opponent, the champion.

I got a 126 pounder, Curmel Motonโ€ฆ. My guy is 17 and his destined to be greatโ€ฆ. [If heโ€™s ready for big matchups] he (Curmel Moton) is born ready, always born ready, see when youโ€™re born ready you donโ€™t gotta get readyโ€ฆ

Curmel Moton made his professional boxing debut in September 2023 and is currently undefeated with five consecutive wins. His most recent win came at his mentorโ€™s headliner fight night in Mexico against Victor Vazquez. Now, it remains to be seen whether Moton will be able to extend his winning streak this weekend or not.
