Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is the face of professional boxing. However, many, like ex-UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo, felt Alvarez was ducking the undefeated David Benavidez. After all, Benavidez is the WBC interim super middleweight champion.
Alvarez recently gave Jaime Munguia his first professional boxing defeat in his recent fight. After the victory, he taunted Benavidez, who was at the event. Many consider Benavidez the biggest threat to Alvarez at super middleweight. Henry Cejudo recently spoke of the stylistic advantage Benavidez has over all others.
He [David Benavidez] has that Mexican heart, that durability of having the 12-round fight where it’s able to favor Mexican boxers, but then he has a technique, you know, of an African-American boxer, just speed, power, going to the body, coming up top.

For his recent fight, Alvarez had the opportunity to fight either Munguia or Benavidez but chose the former. Cejudo had always blasted Alvarez for the decision. Similar was the sentiment of Oscar De La Hoya, who traded barbs with Alvarez before the Jaime Munguia fight.
One person who has first-hand knowledge of Alvarez and Benavidez is Caleb Plant, the recent guest on Cejudoโs Pound 4 Pound podcast. However, Plant didnโt predict the winner of a potential fight between the two but revealed what he felt about them.
Former opponent Caleb Plant speaks on David Benavidez
Henry Cejudo is actually close with David Benavidez. After all, Cejudoโs first boxing trainer was Jose, the father of David and Jose Benavidez Jr. As such, his views on a potential Benavidez vs. Canelo fight have bias. That is not the case with Caleb Plant, who fought both boxers.
In his appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Benavidez didnโt predict the winner of a potential Benavidez vs. Canelo fight, even at the insistence of Cejudo. Nonetheless, he revealed what he knew about Benavidez after he fought him.
David [Benavidez], you know, he’s a great fighter. He’s a big fighter too, you know, he’s a big old boy, and um, he’s able to use a lot of that to his advantage. But at the same time, on top of his weight, his height, his frame, you know, he’s really quick, he’s smart, and you know, he’s able to get rolling downhill on you in a way that it’s hard to keep a big old boy like that off.

Caleb Plant did not have a good time with either Benavidez or Canelo. Against Canelo Alvarez, he lost via TKO, the first defeat of Plantโs professional boxing career. Against Benavidez, he lost via unanimous decision. Plant attributed the loss to Canelo to inexperience, while size was the factor for the Benavidez loss.
