Only a few of the best players to set foot on the pitch have experienced this feeling. Even a smaller subsection of these players have won the Champions League as well.

To conquer the two pinnacles of football is no small achievement. It makes for a remarkable season when a player wins both trophies, more so in the same year. Manchester City wonderkid is the latest to do so, winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup, before completing a treble with the Cityzens five months later.

Alvarez In Elite Company

Alvarez joins an elite company of players who have won the World Cup and Champions League in the same year. Here is a list of all the players who hold this prestigious distinction.

Julian Alvarez (World Cup 2022, Champions League 2022/23)

The most recent example is Julian Alvarez won the Qatar World Cup and the Champions League in Istanbul in quick succession. Although all the other players on the list first went on to win the Champions League with their clubs before the World Cup, it was not the case for the City starlet.

The Winter World Cup came in the middle of the season. Although Alvarez was overshadowed by Erling Haaland at the club level, he had put up solid performances and been a regular scorer in his own right. For Argentina though, he showed the world his quality. He bagged four goals, including a brace in the semi-final against Croatia.

Raphael Varane (World Cup 2018, Champions League 2017/18)

On the other side of Manchester, we see another player who has achieved this remarkable feat. French center-back Raphael Varane was a key figure in leading the country to its second World Cup. Before the campaign in the summer of 2022, he also helped Real Madrid win their 13th Champions League title, which was their third in a row.

The Manchester United defender formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Ramos in the backline. For the national team, he formed another impervious pair with Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti. He started all seven games, winning all, and keeping four clean sheets, and netted a goal in the quarter-final against Uruguay.

Roberto Carlos (World Cup 2002, Champions League 2001/02)

Moving from one Real Madrid defender to another, there is Roberto Carlos. Often considered one of the best left-backs of all time, Carlos was integral to Brazil’s victory in 2002. They won their record fifth competition and went unbeaten in the tournament.

Roberto Carlos was an integral part of a stacked squad including the likes of Ronaldinho, Rivalo, Ronaldo Nazario, and Kaka. For the club, he was a part of Real Madrid’s 2001/02 Champions League winning team. He helped them win their ninth CL title. He netted two goals and five assists, along with being part of a defense that maintained seven clean sheets

Christian Karembeu (World Cup 1998, Champions League 1997/98)

In the 1998 World Cup held on home soil, Karembeu played four out of the seven games, all of them as a starter. The French international of Cameroonian descent was a key figure in the center of the park for the Les Blues. He boasted an impressive work rate, in addition to his fine technical skills. He helped the European giants to win their first-ever World Cup.

The midfielder also led Real Madrid to their eighth Champions League title. In five games for the Los Blancos, Karembeu scored three goals en route to the triumph. He currently works as a sporting director for Greek giants Olympiacos.

Bayern Munich has been the foremost club in German football for a long time. In the 1973/74 season, a core of German players (then West Germany) were from Bayern Munich. They included Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, and Uli Hoeness.

They led West Germany to victory in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Beckenbauer’s leadership and revolutionary role as a sweeper and Muller’s goal-scoring prowess are fondly remembered by Germans. Sep Maier was a reliable figure in goal, and coupled with Breitner’s versatility, Schwarzenbeck’s solid defending, and Hoeness’ midfield contributions, the national and club squads became deadly.

They played crucial roles in Bayern Munich’s triumph in the 1973/74 UEFA Champions League. It was their first Champions League title, as they beat Atlético Madrid in the finals.
