Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were in the fight for the championship after the first five rounds of the 2023 Formula 1 season. While Verstappen secured three wins, Perez won two races. Due to his promising results, Perez was expected to challenge the reigning world champion, Verstappen. However, things did not go well for the Mexican driver after the fifth round, the Miami Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez crashed during the Monaco GP qualifying and was out of Q1. It was the worst race of the season for him as he could not secure any points finishing 16th. Perez had a miserable qualifying session at the Spanish GP as well. He started the race from 11th place and was the fourth to take the chequered flag. Max Verstappen, the championship leader, has some advice for his teammate.

Verstappen was asked about Perez’s struggle ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. The double-world champion stated, “I found it difficult to comment on that because I don’t know what’s going on in his head. But I learned from a young age that it is always better to focus on yourself and do the best you can because all the other things are out of your control anyway.”

Max Verstappen explained that there is no point in focusing on things that are out of one’s control. He added, “So there is no point trying to focus on that, that is also how I approach it as well. There are always some races in a season which don’t go to plan, and you have a few setbacks.” Verstappen does not believe that it is possible to have success in every single race. He explained that there would be setbacks at times.

Verstappen highlighted the importance of working with the car and the engineers around it to get the best out of it. He believes that it is always important to stay focused. The mighty Red Bull RB19 dominates the field, and with its two drivers, there might be some epic battles in store for the fans.

Perez’s results in Monaco and Spain cost him significant points in the championship standings. Though he remains second, he is now 53 points behind Verstappen. Perez is under pressure to perform and catch up to his teammate. There is no question regarding his talent, but it is essential to eliminate mistakes that could cost him solid points. The king of the streets, Perez, has a chance in the upcoming races to redeem himself and challenge Verstappen for the title.
