Steve Erceg vs Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 301

Steve Erceg was confused when he first heard the news of his title fight at UFC 301. It was not because he was unsure of himself. Funnily enough, Erceg was unsure of where he should put down his KFC. Erceg shared his hilarious first reaction to the news of his title fight against Alexandre Pantoja this May. Here is what happened:

Steve Erceg recently sat down for a conversation with Kacper Rosolowski and Denis Shkuratov of Submission Radio. During the discussion, Shkuratov asked Erceg about his reaction when the news of his spot at UFC 301 was first broken to him. Erceg revealed the story of eating KFC meals when he received the news.

I was at the kitchen table eating KFC when I got the call, enjoying my break. My reaction was sort of last cause two reasons I guess. One was dad sort of predicted the fact that he thought I might get the call, I called him an idiot… the second was I did not know if I should throw out the KFC or finish it.

Erceg ultimately did finish his KFC. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if he overcomes his opponent, Alexandre Pantoja, in the octagon at UFC 301. Erceg has the experience of 13 professional MMA fights under his belt. As such, Pantoja has more experience than him.

Pantoja has much more experience and has competed in the UFC since 2017. Moreover, the Brazilian champion has cleared out the division with wins over the likes of Brandon Moreno, Brandon Royval, Manel Kape, and Alex Perez, just to name a few. Therefore, this is a tough fight for the 28-year-old Steve Erceg.

Steve Erceg is the underdog going into this fight. He has a massive opportunity on his hands, but Pantoja is no amateur. Alexandre Pantoja has a five-fight winning streak heading into his second title defense. The duo will headline the main event at UFC 301.

Fans are definitely expecting a tough fight and so is Steve Erceg. While talking about the matchup he said that Pantoja should take the fight very seriously.

I listened to his coach talk about the fight. If he is listening and paying attention to his coach he knows and he’s talking me seriously. Obviously, fighters have big egos, I’m no different. It’s very possible he thinks he is going to run through me. But if he listens to the people around him, he’ll be taking it very serious.

Erceg wanted Pantoja to take him seriously despite only having only a #10 rank on his name. Most title contenders will have at least a top-five or six ranking. Hence, the Aussie challenger does not want Pantoja to brush him aside. The fight will happen in a few days at the Farmasi Arena In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It will be interesting to see if Steve Erceg becomes the flyweight champion, four fights into his UFC career.
