Dustin Poirier‘s dream of winning the world’s UFC lightweight title remained out of reach. However, against all odds, the ‘Diamond’ delivered a massive performance against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Following the loss, Poirier stated that it could be his final battle. Nevertheless, former featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski has some other plans for the future UFC Hall of Famer.

Alexander Volkanovski had a close eye on the main event bout and shared a video of his reaction on his YouTube channel. In the video,’ The Great’ expressed his interest in fighting Dustin Poirier in a fight later this year.

Maybe depending on what I’m doing, obviously I want to fight later in the year… if the timing works maybe me and Dustin can have a good fight. I know he just wants good fun fights… I think that would be a massive fight so that’s something that I’d be willing to do

Both Volkanovski and Poirier have challenged Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title and have lost in the process. Nonetheless, both got massive respect from fans for their performances against the lightweight champion.

Furthermore, Volkanovski is also aiming for his potential rematch against Ilia Topuria, however, there has been no official announcement regarding the fight. It is expected that fans would love to see a Poirier vs. Volkanovski fight. However, ‘Diamond’ might not be in a position to return to the octagon after the recent loss.

Talking about the fight and its aftermath, Dustin Poirier revealed that he felt extremely bad after the loss. According to the MMA legend, he knows that it was his last shot at the UFC gold and he missed it.

I came up short tonight and it hurts bad; I know that I’m probably not going to get another chance to be undisputed champion and that meant a lot to me… I felt like every time I got off that stool like I was going to win, find a way to win and that’s fighting.
