Chael Sonnen goes back on his substance abuse claims

Trash talk is an art form in any sport, especially MMA. But sometimes, even the masters can miss the mark. Enter Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen, two of the sport’s most notorious trash talkers. This fiasco began after McGregor had pulled out of UFC 303 against Michael Chandler.

The reason for the injury was recently revealed to be a broken pinky toe. Things took a turn for the worse after McGregor snapped at Chael Sonnen for his comments about rehabbing. McGregor, apparently not appreciating Sonnen’s attempt at support, fired back. This prompted Sonnen to unleash a verbal tirade.

You can listen to my account which builds and helps Conor McGregor. Or you can listen to Conor’s account which makes him look like a little b**ch…[Conor] would prefer that you see him as a little b**ch who can’t fight because he’s got a sore toe.

Sonnen went on to suggest that Conor McGregor seemed to prefer being seen as someone who couldn’t fight because he’s got a sore toe. He initially appeared to defend McGregor. Sonnen had suggested there might be more to the story. However, McGregor’s comments infuriated the ‘American Gangster.’

This isn’t the first time Sonnen has taken aim at McGregor. Earlier, he had hinted at potential substance abuse issues that resulted in McGregor’s withdrawal from UFC 303 against Michael Chandler. Sonnen keeps proving that retirement hasn’t dulled his sharp tongue. The man who once claimed to be undefeated is still unbeaten when it comes to verbal sparring.

Chael Sonnen, the former UFC fighter and now analyst, has once again stirred the MMA pot. This time, he backpedaled on his recent claims about Conor McGregor’s rehab stint. Sonnen had initially suggested that McGregor’s withdrawal from UFC 303 was due to substance abuse.

The Irish superstar was set to face Michael Chandler on June 29. However, the fight was postponed, leaving fans wondering what happened. In an episode of his podcast Beyond The Fight, Sonnen clarified his stance. The retired fighter admitted he didn’t know for sure if McGregor was in rehab.

I do not know that Conor [McGregor] is in rehab, for one. For two, I wouldn’t begrudge or tease Conor in the least if he was in rehab, I would be very proud of Conor, and I would imagine for somebody in his spot, to go into rehab is something you want to keep quiet.

Sonnen explained that going to rehab in Ireland would require great humility from McGregor. He pointed out that substance abuse issues affect many people and their families. This isn’t the first time McGregor has made headlines for non-fighting reasons. The former two-division champion has a knack for controversy. From bus attacks to bar brawls, he’s kept fans and critics on their toes.
