Trash-talking is an art form in MMA. Fighters can win half the battle just by getting under their opponent’s skin. When it comes to verbal warfare, few can match the skills of Chael Sonnen. The UFC legend is known for his sharp tongue and witty one-liners, but it seems his son has inherited the same talent, although with a touch of savage humor. This came ahead of his bout with Anderson Silva.

Sonnen is set to go against Anderson Silva in a highly anticipated boxing match. The ‘American Gangster’ sought his son’s advice on how to defeat the Brazilian icon. The father-son duo was interviewed on The MMA Hour by Ariel Helwani. The response from the trash-talking legend‘s son was both hilarious and unexpected. This is what he stated when asked by his father if he could beat Silva:

Yeah. By cheating.

While cheating is certainly not condoned in any sport, the quip showcased the younger Sonnen’s knack for comedic timing. It also highlighted the playful dynamic between father and son, where banter and ribbing are the norm. The father-son duo have been seen together in front of the camera multiple times.

Chael Sonnen last fought in 2019 against Lyoto Machida. He lost the fight via a second-round TKO. Silva retired from MMA in 2020 after losing against Uriah Hall. He, however, is still active in boxing, with his last fight coming against Jake Paul in 2022. He lost the fight via unanimous decision. Sonnen will now have his last chance at redemption against the ‘Spider.’

Chael Sonnen is never one to mince words. His motivations for the upcoming boxing match against Anderson Silva are as raw and unfiltered as his infamous trash-talking persona. This long-awaited trilogy bout, albeit in the boxing ring, carries immense personal significance for Sonnen. He seeks to rectify the past and rewrite the narrative of his storied rivalry with the Brazilian legend.

Chael Sonnen revealed that this was his chance to finally put an end to his intense rivalry with Anderson Silva. He reflected on their two previous MMA encounters, where he lost both times on his ESPN show with Daniel Cormier. His words carried conviction and a sense of responsibility towards himself.

There is nothing about this where I go ‘boxing is not quite my style.’ I’m going out there to beat this man, to fix my life, or I am going to go the rest of my days looking at my career as a miserable fail.

The sting of those losses, particularly the submission defeat mere moments away from achieving his dream of becoming a champion, still lingers. His words paint a vivid picture of a man on a mission, fueled by a burning desire to right the wrongs of the past and secure a definitive victory over his longtime nemesis.
