UFC referees often find themselves in the middle of tough situations that could easily turn out to be controversial. This happened with referee Jason Herzog in the Jared Cannonier vs. Nassourdine Imavov fight. Even the record-breaking UFC Louisville fight night faced a controversial stoppage. Surprisingly, the ref took accountability and accepted his mistake.

In the much anticipated main event bout, Jason Herzog prematurely stopped the fight in the fourth round. The one-sided exchange between Jared Cannonier and Nassourdine Imavov in the fourth round prompted the referee to stop that fight. However, according to many fans, it was controversial, and Herzog addressed it on his X account.

I get it. I know what I was seeing in the moment, but I’ve gotten enough feedback telling me I need to reevaluate,  so I will.

During the exchange, Imavov was the aggressor, and Cannonier tried evading the strikes. In the process, ‘The Killa Gorilla’ didn’t land anything in return; surprisingly, it was enough for the referee to call off the fight. Immediately after that, Cannonier protested, and so did the fans at KFC Yum! Center with boos.

Cannonier was furious, given that he was aiming for a title shot with a potential win against Imavov. Given his age, many fans expected this might be his last title run, which ended in the most controversial way. On the other hand, Imavov celebrated his win and even warned his future opponents.

In the post-fight interview, Nassourdine Imavov talked about his game plan and how he managed his distance to get a finish. The fighter also mentioned that the win is a testament to his capabilities as a top middleweight in the division.

I knew I can counter him with the jab but I had to take the time to find the right distance. So, I took my time and I was about to finish him, felt my power…I can sit amongst the best and the message is respect my name.

A win against someone like Cannonier was a big thing for Imavov. Moreover, it won’t be surprising to see him competing against other top fighters in the division. Is it enough to land him his rematch against Sean Strickland? Only time will tell the answer.
