Several fighters in the UFC have incorporated trash talks into their game. Colby Covington is one of them who had to use it to prevent his release from the promotion. However, he does not think he is the best trash-talker in the UFC.
Conor McGregor‘s name comes to the mind of modern MMA fans when they think of trash talks. After all, his trash talk and exciting fighting style skyrocketed his fame and the UFC’s. However, according to Covington, McGregor is the second-best trash-talker in the UFC. For Covington, a certain three-time UFC title challenger deserved the nod to be the first.

Covington idolized Chael Sonnen as both were from Oregon. Moreover, he grew up with the three-time UFC title challenger who also imparted knowledge to his young prodigee. Sonnen even trained with Covington before his second fight with Anderson Silva.
Many felt Sonnen got the opportunities he got due to his trash talks. After all, he bagged a light heavyweight title shot against Jon Jones after he lost to Anderson Silva in a middleweight title fight. Therefore, Covington’s claim that McGregor is second to Sonnen in trash talks is quite valid.

Conor McGregor was the UFC’s first simultaneous double champion. Even though he never defended either title, some call him the greatest UFC featherweight. He did not achieve superstardom through fighting alone. His trash-talking skills were as impressive if not better than his fighting skills.

He’s [Conor McGregor] definitely mimicked and saw a lot of what Chael [Sonnen] did and put it in his own right. So, he’s definitely hilarious at the press conference. He’s a guy that gets everybody hyped up, and you go and you’re going to have a laugh, you’re going to be entertained. And that’s what the sport’s all about, being entertained and understanding that it’s show business. And there’s not a better showman than Conor McGregor.

For Covington, McGregor is a dream matchup. Even though Covington is one of the best welterweights, he is also small for the division. Moreover, McGregor’s upcoming fight against Michael Chandler is at welterweight. Even though chances are slim, a potential McGregor vs. Covington would be a spectacle.
