Former title challenger calls new UFC gloves as an 'unfortunate step backwards' amid positive fan reaction

The new and upgraded gloves from UFC have created quite a buzz in the fight community. Among the positive remarks, there are few critics for the gloves. Former UFC fighter, Dan Hardy is one of them and has called the UFC out for their new product.

Dan Hardy recently took to X and shared his honest opinion on the new gloves introduced by the UFC. While talking about them, Hardy revealed that the gloves are a major disappointment. The British superstar claimed that the individual who designed the gloves must be an amateur.

The UFC has done a really good things with the fight kits, both for comfort and purpose. The new gloves though, are an unfortunate step backwards. It’s like they’ve been designed by someone who’s never punched anything before. The problem is clear, but still unsolved.

The new gloves were introduced last month at an official presentation in Las Vegas. Fans and fighters have always talked about changing the gloves due to the rise in cases of accidental eye pokes. The modification in the new gloves was intended to maintain dexterity and avoid impacting performances or results.  On top of it, with the main intention of lowering hand injuries and eye pokes.

The gloves are expected to be used at the upcoming UFC 302 on June 1 in Newark, New Jersey. In the main event bout, lightweight champion Islam Makhachev is scheduled to defend his title against Dustin Poirier. Both fighters have already been given the new gloves to get accustomed to the new ones. While many fighters have given positive reviews about the gloves, Dan Hardy is definitely not satisfied yet.

Dan Hardy doesn’t think the new gloves can solve UFC’s eye poke problems

Eye pokes are extremely common in UFC fights. In the past various significant fights had to be stopped by the referees due to accidental eye pokes from fighters. These incidents not only impact the momentum of the fights but also can have a severe impact on fighters‘ health. While UFC’s latest initiative with the new gloves to avoid these, Dan Hardy doesn’t think it will work.

While responding to an X user, Hardy showed concerns about his wife Veronica Hardy, and the eye poke situation in the UFC. Hardy revealed that he wants the gloves to work but he isn’t so sure about them.

Ah, well we’ll see mate. For the sake of my wife and all of the other fighters, I hope that they solve the eye-poke problem. I just don’t think they’ll stand the rest of time.

In the past many fighters have complained about the inefficiency of the gloves which has caused various eye pokes. While few have given their own solutions, it seems like the UFC is pretty confident about their latest production. Nevertheless, only time will tell whether these new gloves are any better than the old ones.
