It is not new to see records get broken by the stars of the game daily. But some records are once in a lifetime. Around this time last year, NBA fans got to witness a history of such kind, when LeBron James passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.

On Saturday, James accomplished another unique record. The Los Angeles Lakers forward became the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 regular season points. Despite it being a huge night for James, the Lakers lost the game to the Denver Nuggets 124-114. After the game, ESPN’s NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith expressed disappointment towards the Lakers for losing on James’ historic night.

The Lakers have lost many important games this season. He said,

I’m quite disgusted. Opening night the Lakers open the season, they lose to the Nuggets. The night Kobe statue was revealed, they lose that night. Tonight, LeBron James passes 40,000 points, they lose that game. It seems like the big moments the Lakers don’t measure up to.

Smith called out the team for not playing D’Angelo Russell in the second half when the game changed in Nuggets’ favor. He also called out Anthony Davis for his rather disappointing contribution while facing Nikola Jokic.

You can’t have Nikola Jokic dropping 35 and Anthony Davis have 17.

But the night was ruined as the Lakers could not finish the game with a win. The Lakers had the lead until the half-time. Despite a dominant performance by the Nuggets in the third, the game was still tied when the fourth quarter started. In the final four minutes of the game, the Nuggets took the lead and won the game by ten points.

The Lakers have lost a few important games this year. Including the night James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and Kobe Bryant’s statue-unveiling night. NBA fans were disappointed by the team for being unable to end the night the right way.
