On Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers played against the San Antonio Spurs. It was a close game, but the Lakers maintained a lead throughout the game. The Lakers won the game 123-118. Despite the loss, the Spur’s rookie star Victor Wembanyama was praised for breaking a unique record during the game.
In the loss, the 2023 first-overall pick scored a 5×5 stat line with 27 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals, and 5 blocks. In NBA history, this has only been done 21 times. He also became the youngest player for the achievement. The Spurs star also joined Michael Jordan as the only player to achieve this in consecutive games.
After the game, Lakers veteran LeBron James praised the rookie.
He’s special. He has an unbelievable coach [Gregg Popovich] that’s gonna make sure he plays the game the right way. He is already special but he’s gonna get better and better each game and each year he steps on the floor.
James told ESPN
After the matchup, both the former No. 1 picks posted pictures on Instagram showing respect for each other. Captioning it with a ‘crown’ and ‘alien’ emoji referring to their respective famous nicknames. James scored 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists for the Lakers.

Wembanyama was the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. LeBron James also was the first overall pick in the 2003 draft. Similar to James, Webanyama’s draft was one of the most anticipated draft picks in the NBA. The rookie caught everyone’s attention based on his amazing stats and his 7’4″ height.

Despite the Spurs not having a great run in the regular season, Wembanyama is achieving some of the best records in NBA history. It is only his first year in the league, and the way he is going, the rookie has an amazing future ahead of him.
