Australia pulled off a sensation win against England in the first Ashes Test on Tuesday. Captain Pat Cummins led Australia to a historic win with Nathan Lyon aiding him in the middle. It was quite an emotional moment for Cummins who was at the receiving end of the famous Headingley Test in 2019. The Australian had his revenge and so was elated.
Cummins animatedly celebrated the win, throwing his helmet and bat in the air. The Australian captain was chuffed to bits and when he was asked to pick between two of his latest wins in Test cricket- WTC Final and Ashes Test, Cummins showed no hesitation.
The Australia skipper took no time in rating this win in Edgbaston higher than the one at The Oval last week. “Number one, yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Start of an Ashes series, number one,” said Cummins after the win.
Had Pat Cummins done a Ben Stokes?
The Australia captain was also asked about the controversial declaration made by England captain Ben Stokes. Cummins was asked if he had done what his English counterpart did and the Australian had a clear answer here too. “No, probably not,” quipped Cummins with a sheepish smile on his face.
Cummins also talked about the atmosphere in the Australian dressing room post this historic win. He said that most of the players were a part of that Headingley Test and so it felt satisfying to pull off this win. Cummins also spared a thought for England who were on the opposite end of the spectrum.
“Yeah, we’ve been on the other side of it the last series. It was a wonderful Test match. Really hard fought. It is one of those wins when you are on the other side of it, really hurts. Feels like one that got away. So, it’s a pretty happy dressing room at the moment,” said the Australia captain.
