Victor Wembanyama, the French phenom who is widely expected to be the top pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, got a taste of American sports culture on Tuesday night. He was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the New York Yankees game, but it didn’t go as planned.
Wembanyama, who landed in the US on Monday, was thrilled to visit one of the most iconic venues in sports history. He donned a Joe DiMaggio No. 5 jersey and a pair of exclusive Nike x Drake sneakers as he walked onto the field at Yankee Stadium. He also posted a picture of himself holding a baseball, which looked minuscule in his enormous hands.
However, when it came time to deliver the pitch, Wembanyama missed the mark by a wide margin. He tossed the ball way outside the plate, bypassing the catcher completely.

Wembanyama is projected to be chosen by the San Antonio Spurs with the first overall pick in the draft, which will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Thursday night. He will also join the NBA Summer League in July, where he will compete against other rookies and young players.

Despite the negative feedback, Wembanyama didn’t seem to be bothered by it. He also had a good time at the stadium, signing autographs for fans, chatting with Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman, and hitting some balls in the batting cages.
Wembanyama is regarded as one of the most gifted prospects ever to enter the NBA. He has received compliments from LeBron James, who called him a “generational talent”, and from Richard Jefferson, who said he would be picked before James if they were in the same draft.
Wembanyama has been playing professionally in France for Metropolitans 92, where he averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game last season. He led his team to the LNB Pro A finals, where they fell to Monaco in four games.
Wembanyama may have botched his first pitch, but he is unlikely to do so on his first shot in the NBA.
