The introduction of Next-Gen cars has brought waves of changes to NASCAR. Events such as the Clash at the Colosseum and Chicago Street Race were dramatic changes to the schedule. It was a big surprise to the sports fans as the sanctioning body was reluctant to make such changes in the past.
According to recent reports, NASCAR will ditch two Road Course races for ovals. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course race will be the first to go. Brickyard has hosted a few underwhelming races in the cup schedule, and NASCAR wants to return to the original oval track at the IMSA facility that hosts the Indy 500.
The second race that might get replaced is the Charlotte ROVAL Road course race. The Athletic reports that NASCAR plans to return to the 1.5 miles oval on the same facility from the 2024 seasonโs playoffs. Indy and Charlotte are two tracks for oval racing with a Road course option. So, a return for the original configuration will be received well by the fans.
The move is also beneficiary considering NASCARโs decision to go international. A Return of the top three national series races to Mexico and Canada is close. If NASCAR decides to test the waters in other countries, the races will probably be hosted by well-equipped road courses. So, limiting such races in the current schedule will help to add proper tracks.
Ditching the Indy RC race will be received well by drivers
Brickyard has s known for its superfast oval track, and growing up, every driver would have dreamed of one day racing there. The RC has been a lackluster event since its debut, and racing on such a historic oval is often deemed a disrespectful move by fans.
Two times Cup champion Kyle Busch recently said that if NASCAR canโt race on Indy Oval, they should ditch the track altogether. He said, โI donโt think it did an uptick or changed a damn thing at Indy. If we canโt do a good enough job getting enough people to Indy to suffice us staying on the oval, then we need to go somewhere else,โ.
His ex-teammate and 23Xi Racing co-owner, Denny Hamlin, was also an advocate of the Ovalโs return. He said, โIโve been a huge advocate of putting these NextGen cars back on the oval at the Brickyard. Itโs so much more prestigious. The Indy Road course is not a marquee eventโฆIโm looking forward to going back (to Indianapolis), Iโm hearing, next year, on the oval,โ.
