Over the years, the UFC community has witnessed the emergence of several top MMA fighters. One notable name on that list is Hawaiian representative Max Holloway, who currently holds the title of BMF champion in the promotion. Interestingly, his reign as the BMF champion has sparked discussions among some of the top analysts in the sport.

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier currently serves as one of the top analysts in the UFC community. He frequently engages in intriguing discussions about various subjects of the UFC. Recently, Cormier shared his insights on Max Holloway’s reign as the BMF champion. Along with that, the UFC legend also discussed how the Hawaiian fighter has generated significant buzz around the title.

The BMF championship is almost becoming a division in itself. At 155, you can almost make a BMF division with guys who are so well-known but aren’t contending for championships anymore, it could be more fun. Max Holloway, who still does have the ability to go get a title fight at 155. Dustin, Chandler, Dan Hooker, all those guys could be fighting in that division.

The BMF title was inaugurated in 2019 when Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz fought for the belt at UFC 244. Masvidal became the title holder by defeating Diaz comfortably via TKO. In 2023, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje fought for the title at UFC 291, where Gaethje emerged victorious.

Fast forward to UFC 300, Holloway stepped in to clash against ‘The Highlight’ for the BMF crown. Surprisingly, the Hawaiian fighter delivered a brutal beatdown to Gaethje, further elevating his stature in the promotion. Interestingly, the knockout even became one of the most talked about moments of UFC in 2024.

Following Holloway’s impressive victory at UFC 300, he has become one of the most sought-after opponents in the UFC lightweight division. As a result, several contenders are eager to face the former featherweight champion for the BMF title. Notably, Cormier has echoed this sentiment, suggesting that it could lead to the creation of a distinct division within the promotion.

Holloway appears to be interested in competing in the UFC’s lightweight division next. Currently, there are several unbooked fighters in the 155-pound category, with Dustin Poirier being one of the notable names on the list. However, a report from MMASound suggest that Holloway will defend his BMF title for the first time against Poirier at UFC 313 in March 2025.

Poirier has expressed his desire for one last fight following his loss to Islam Makhachev in his last bout. He and Holloway have faced each other twice in the past, and it will be interesting to see if the UFC is interested in setting up a trilogy fight between the two. In the meantime, Poirier has recently indicated that negotiations for his next fight are already in progress.
