It went from bad to worse on lap 57 when the race director Micheal Masi permitted the lapped cars between Hamilton and Verstappen to move out of the way. It is safe to say Masi’s decision impacted the race result.
Verstappen overtook Hamilton on turn 5 and won his first Formula 1 world championship. It was a night filled with many emotions. The FIA later confirmed that “human error” was a factor that changed the outcome of the race. Micheal Masi was removed as race director ahead of the 2022 season. However, many fans have not forgotten the race as it remains a hot topic on social media.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton’s contract expires at the end of the 2023 season, and he has not extended it yet. The Mercedes driver and team boss Toto Wolff are in talks about a new deal.
