Speaking with People magazine two decades later, Somerhalder reflected on his past image as a “heartthrob,” acknowledging that while being featured on magazine covers and sexy lists was a significant part of his career back then, his priorities have shifted over time. Nowadays, the actor, in partnership with Nutro, a pet treats brand, is more focused on passion projects such as his environmental advocacy and raising his children with his wife, Niki Reed, who is 36 years old.
“As you reach a certain point in your career, you start to think about what truly matters. For me, it’s about family, the future of farming, food, energy, and other significant issues. I no longer feel the need to chase accolades or validation,” Somerhalder shared with the publication.
Reflecting on his younger self, Somerhalder admitted that there are a few tweaks he might have made in his approach, particularly in his professional dealings. However, when it comes to his personal journey, he expressed contentment with the choices he’s made.
While reminiscing about his early days, Somerhalder confessed to People that he might have been a bit less punctual on the set of Lost due to exhaustion from a late night out. Despite these minor slip-ups, he remains grateful for the opportunities that both Lost and The Vampire Diaries provided him. These experiences have shaped him into the person he is today – someone who feels most at home in a pair of cowboy boots, living a simple country life surrounded by cows and horses.
