“Since Virat Kohli..,” Salman Butt points out MAJOR REASON behind India’s WTC Final defeat

India’s long 10-year wait for an ICC trophy was extended after they lost to Australia by 209 runs in the World Test Championship Final. Team India faced massive backlash from various ex-cricketers post their humiliating defeat to Australia at The Oval and among them was also former Pakistan cricketer, Salman Butt.

While talking about the WTC Final on his YouTube channel, Salman Butt analyzed India’s loss wherein he discussed why their dominance has been fading in tests. He questioned the team’s approach and slammed the Indian captain’s leadership along with the comments he made in the post-match press conference.

Butt displayed strong disbelief in India captain Rohit Sharma’s ability to carry forward the team’s dominance and believes that Virat Kohli stepping down from captaincy has disrupted the team’s mojo.

“India have an impressive away record in Tests. However, it has all been downhill since Virat Kohli stepped down as captain. Things haven’t been stable since then. They would have won in India anyway, even without having a captain. One can assess captaincy only when the team tours abroad,” he said.

He further slammed Rohit Sharma for his comment wherein he asked whether the WTC final could be played outside England. “Rohit Sharma asked why the final of the World Test Championship takes place in June. He also stated that it should be moved out of England. These are the debates that happen once you don’t get favourable results.”

Salman Butt wasn’t happy with the team’s overall performance either and questioned whether the team’s priorities are straight. He said that if the WTC was their priority, they should’ve finished the IPL 20 days earlier for the team to prepare in England.

“Instead, we should talk about priorities. If the WTC final was India’s priority, they should have finished the IPL before 20 days. They should have sent their squad to England 15 days before the final to play a couple of matches against county teams.”
