In a recent interview, Konkona Sen Sharma shed light on the harsh realities of the film industry, bringing to the forefront issues that are often swept under the rug. She bravely shared her experiences and observations, revealing a troubling ‘hierarchy’ that exists on film sets, based on factors like gender, caste, and class.
During a candid conversation with Sucharita Tyagi on her YouTube channel, Konkona Sen Sharma didn’t hold back in addressing the unfair gender dynamics that plague the industry. She painted a stark picture of film sets being structured hierarchically, where one’s treatment and privileges are dictated by gender, class, or caste.
"It’s deeply troubling, patriarchal, regressive, and hierarchical," Konkona Sen Sharma emphasized. "Even the most basic things like catering arrangements, seating arrangements, and restroom facilities are decided by these outdated norms. It’s disheartening to witness the blatant discrimination that occurs."
Konkona also expressed her distress over the mistreatment of women in the industry. Drawing from her extensive two-decade-long career, she highlighted how only senior women receive respect on set, while others are often treated as mere props or objects.
"The disregard for their well-being is evident in the way their boundaries are constantly violated," Konkona Sen Sharma lamented. "It’s the subtle nuances of exploitation that pervade every corner of the industry. Working in such an environment is challenging, but witnessing it is equally harrowing."
Delving deeper into the issue, Konkona Sen Sharma acknowledged the prevalence of unreported cases of sexual harassment on film sets. She expressed her dismay at this alarming reality, but also commended the courage of women who navigate such hostile work environments.
Beyond her advocacy, Konkona Sen Sharma continues to make waves in the industry. Following her appearance in "Killer Soup," she is currently engrossed in filming her upcoming project, "Metro… In Dino."
