Former India captain Sourav Ganguly rated the Indian Premier League (IPL) above the World Cup in terms of which of these two tournaments is the most difficult one to win. His answer came after India’s horrible performance in the recently concluded World Test Championship (WTC) Final, Rohit Sharma and Co. were hammered by a massive 209 runs by Australia.
After Team India’s failure, as is always seen during these important matches, a captain is at the receiving end of fans’ incessant trolling. So India captain Rohit Sharma is also facing this criticism and fans are even demanding his retirement from the longest format. On Twitter, one can find tweets requesting the board to give Virat Kohli’s Test captaincy also.
Ganguly, in a recent interview with Aaj Tak, said the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) had nothing to do with Kohli’s leaving Test captaincy. In fact, the former BCCI president claimed the board was shocked by Kohli’s decision. After the end of Kohli’s captaincy stint, the BCCI had to hand the reins to Rohit Sharma.

Sourav Ganguly backs Rohit Sharma amidst criticism
And amid the recent trolling on social media, Ganguly backed Rohit with a startling statement on IPL and World Cup. The Delhi Capitals head coach believes Rohit is also a successful skipper because he led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL trophies.
According to Ganguly, winning the IPL is more difficult than the World Cup as a team has to play 14 league matches and then take part in the playoffs before heading to the final, which is not the case in the World Cups. “I have full faith in Rohit. He and MS Dhoni have won five IPL titles,” Ganguly told Aaj Tak.
“Winning the IPL isn’t easy because it’s a tough tournament. Winning the IPL is more difficult than winning a World Cup as there are 14 matches after which you take part in the playoffs. In the World Cup, it takes only 4-5 matches for a place in the semis. In the IPL, it takes 17 matches for you to become champions,” he added.
