Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons has faced heavy criticism from NBA players and analysts, many labeling his contract the league’s worst. Plagued by health issues since his days with the Sixers, Simmons has spent more time on the sidelines than on the court.
Recently, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas talked about Ben Simmons and his potential to return to his All-Star form. Arenas stated about the potential role Simmons could play for the Nets in the upcoming season.
Gilbert Arenas mentioned that Simmons should be a dominant player in the post due to his 6’11” stature. He also discussed how Simmons could make easy drives to the basket and even showcase his elite playmaking skills.
I personally would tell him, keep driving until somebody actually stops you, until someone makes you change directions. I need your foot in the paint on every fast break. You taking the ball to the paint every – you’re 6’11”, athletic, we don’t even know if you’re righthanded or left-handed.

Arenas even compared Simmons to the young version of Magic Johnson, who was an elite playmaker. But further, Agent Zero even noted how the game has changed and how point guards have become the primary offensive option of the team.

Recently, Simmons’ shooting practice video went viral over social media. Fans were skeptical of Simmons’ post, as past videos of him working on his shot never translated to improvement during the season.

If healthy, he could be a valuable asset to the Nets’ young core. However, with a weak roster, many doubt the Nets’ playoff chances, with some analysts speculating they might tank for the top pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
Ben Simmons showed great promise at the start of his career but failed to deliver
Before entering the NBA, Ben Simmons was a highly touted 6’11” point guard with elite playmaking and court vision. Drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2016, Simmons became part of their “Trust the Process” strategy of tanking for top young talent.
In his rookie season, Simmons was great as he averaged 15.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 8.1 assists. Many analysts praised Simmons for elite playmaking skills and play in the post. During his time with the Sixers, Ben Simmons earned three All-Star appearances, but after his poor shooting was exposed, his performance declined.
Eventually traded to the Nets, Simmons has struggled to stay healthy, frequently dealing with injuries. He’s even been fined by the NBA for missing games, making him the most financially penalized player in the league. Despite this, many fans still hope Simmons can return to his All-Star form.
