Why Olympic Gold Medalist Stephen Curry Is Called

Stephen Curry is coming off one of the most defining moments of his basketball career. Despite finishing his season early with the Golden State Warriors, the 4-time NBA champion took on the task of helping Team USA Basketball win gold at the Paris Olympics. He ended up achieving that goal in style, as his scoring not only brought the gold home but also brought him a new nickname.

The Olympic gold medalist was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about the Summer Games, among other things. When host Stephen Colbert asked him about the ‘Devil’ nickname, Stephen Curry said it was hilarious to listen to on the French broadcast. However, he had certain reservations about the nickname.

I watched a lot of the highlights from it, and the French broadcast was hilarious. ‘The Devil Curry does it again. I would not be adopting that nickname though.

That nickname became a phenomenon throughout the Paris Olympics. Especially after French commentators used that to describe his scoring. In fact, they were trying to relay their horrors as the Golden State Warriors superstar lofted three-pointers to nullify every score from the French men’s basketball team.

This shut down the possibility of them winning an Olympic gold medal on home soil. His scoring was so effective that even those French commentators were in disbelief. As they cannot curse on a live broadcast, using the ‘Devil’ nickname was the closest they could get.

It was indeed one of the developments during the Olympics. Even though their horrors made that nickname viral, Stephen Curry has chosen not to adopt it for natural reasons. Instead, he has filed a petition to trademark another French term.

Another talking point during the Paris Olympics delved into the poor shooting form of Curry in the initial games. On the same show, host Stephen Colbert asked Curry what helped him to come out of his shooting slump after the first four games of the Paris Olympics. He had an interesting answer.

I was doing an interview with one of the guys from Bay Area. And when he asked me the same question, positive self-talk came out. I was like, ‘Nah, we’re winning, I know a flurry is coming’. As soon as I said it, Bron walks right behind me, he’s like ‘Damn right it is’, with his baritone voice.

That shows that whatever rivalry LeBron James and Stephen Curry have had over the past decade, the respect remains. James knew it would not be long before Curry started shooting lights out again. The Warriors star joked that it was difficult to like James during their time on Team USA. He also acknowledged that respect and friendship will not come in the way of their rivalry when it resumes in the upcoming NBA season. It goes to show how ‘real’ recognizes ‘real.’
