Certain super fights fail to materialize in the UFC. Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov remains the prime example. In terms of interest, Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall excites fans in the same way as Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov did. The โGOATโ unifying his undisputed title with the best heavyweight talent in the UFC remains an exciting prospect. Despite no interest, Jones made some bold claims recently.
Jonesโ inactivity is not by choice. He was set to face Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 last November but withdrew. Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall won the interim title and even defended it once. Now, the Brit doubled down on unification. So far, Jones has never entertained a fight against Aspinall. However, he didnโt hesitate to make his feelings known on what would happen in the potential fight.
Bro, absolutely. Iโm getting close to being in fight shape and Iโm weighing in at 245 now. He probably cuts weight to get down to heavyweight. The night we fought he would probably weigh a solid 25 pounds more than me, seven years younger, and I would still whip his a** like Iโve done everyone else. You guys can go ahead and believe the hype, Iโll keep doing what Iโve always done, win.

Aspinall has become a fan-favorite, inching to fight at every turn. Now, he only has the undisputed title on his mind. Jones will likely defend the belt for the first time this November when he takes on Miocic in New York. By then, 20 months would have passed since his quick submission of Ciryl Gane in March 2023. Thus leaving even hardcore fans frustrated with his inactivity.
For reference, Conor McGregor, the former dual-division champ, had to relinquish his belt after 511 inactive days. However, CEO Dana White has been promoting that Jonesโ injury kept him out, not him ducking or refusing. Hence, by the looks of it, the first British heavyweight champion will still have to wait. The saga doesnโt end there, as Jones says never.
โLegacy will be fineโ for Jon Jones without Tom Aspinall, but options are still open
Tom Aspinallโs change of tone towards UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones made headlines last week. Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC), who had been somewhat respectfully coy about fighting Jones, turned up the heat with skits and demands. Meanwhile, during Whiteโs Contender Series 69 (DWCS) at Apex, he vehemently defendedย Jonesโ undying UFC pound-for-pound worth.
If not for Aspinallโs effort, the pound-for-pound debate has moreover gushed in the Jones vs. Aspinall talks. The 31-year-old from England remains a new breed of heavyweight fighter. With quick feet and impressive aggression, no has gone the distance with Aspinall. Naturally, a matchup between the GOAT and the talented new breed of heavyweight remains the best possible fight to book.
The disputed โundisputedโ champ, however, says he is happy where he is, and the attention is only making his legacy more bloated. Jon Jones is also unfazed by the PED usage claims and remains engaged in patting himself on the back.
Jones still refuses to commit to a fight with Tom Aspinall if he can get past Miocic. Yet the fighter does not show the same class he had towards, say, Chael Sonnen when they met a while back, despite their long history. Sonnen even interviewd him. Instead of class comes a lot of cryptic hints and mockery.
Jones is projecting a return for UFC 309. As for now, itโs anyoneโs guess as to whether a fight with Aspinall will ever come to pass. There is a possibility of the fight never happening. Considering the tone of Jones in the X tweets, the fans can add Jones vs. Aspinall to the same class as Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov.
